It's All Happening (No Really, All At Once)
Evil men are dying, The Mummy is coming back with Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz, my newly installed security system is incessantly beeping and I am slowing losing myself to insanity... a lot is happening!
What a day, you guys. Evil men are dying, The Mummy is coming back with Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz, my newly installed security system is incessantly beeping and I am slowing losing myself to insanity... a lot is happening!
"A lot is happening" has been the theme over the last week, in fact. No job, but a lot of other things. We take spooky time very seriously in our little family, which meant that the last week was an absolute deluge of activities. We walked around Haddonfield (read: South Pasadena), went to a Halloween-themed beer festival, attended a premiere, closed down Halloween Horror Nights and then did a full day at Disneyland immediately following, then friends were in town so we took their kiddo Trick or Treating and then saw the man, the myth, the legend John Carpenter in concert.

my feet hurt.
Then some lunatic tried to break into our house.
We are fine, albeit very tired, given that it happened immediately after everything else. I've lived in plenty of bad neighborhoods before, so I'm less inclined to stress in that regard (especially because we know who it was, have footage of it, and the cops simply aren't doing anything — thanks LAPD). However, our base for the myriad of security cameras our landlord just installed won't stop chirping and that is slowly driving me insane.
Amidst all of the above chaos, there was some work chaos as well. I moderated two Q&As in one night — an insane mission that I feel incredibly blessed to have been tasked with — with two wonderful casts who were fully on board with the insanity. The first was for Queens of the Dead, which is in theaters now and you should make your way to go see it immediately. After that and at a completely separate location was Violent Ends, which happened to be another banger. The former is made up of queer joy and zombie goodness, directed by the one and only Tina Romero (daughter of zombie legend George A. Romero), while the latter is an impressive juxtaposition of violence and melancholy (directed by John-Michael Powell).

Yes one is stolen from Instagram, I can't drag a photographer w/ me everywhere I go (thank you Rosie I love you!)
Because of all of the Halloween and moderating chaos, I didn't get the opportunity to write a ton over the last week, but there are lot of exciting things in the pipeline. In the meantime, I had the opportunity to watch Predator: Badlands last night and that ended up being an absolute joy. I'm a sucker for the franchise in general, but Badlands, like Prey, is something completely new. I mentioned over on bsky that it's my favorite comedy of the year, and I do not mean that as a bit. It is unexpectedly hilarious and heartfelt in equal measure, and I liked it a great deal.
Meanwhile, I'll be hosting some Die My Love shenanigans tomorrow in partnership with Fangoria and MUBI; have a couple very exciting interviews in the pipeline, and I am helping out behind the scenes with the upcoming First In Fright compendium that Fangoria is currently crowdfunding for. Meredith Borders, who is the smartest, prettiest, most capable person ever, is writing it, so you definitely want to ensure it ends up on your shelf!

The last week has been The Most™, but it also filled my heart with a lot of love. It's a welcome feeling on the heels of a bestie visit (and subsequent farewells, which are always hard). Thankful for mail-in voting, because my life would have been even more chaotic if I needed to go in person. I hope you sent your ballots in! I hope if you're in New York you helped further the socialist agenda! And I hope your heart is as full as mine, and that our next week is still nice but maybe a little bit quieter.
Thanks for being here, and thanks for listening to my ramblings as I stumble along on my weird little journey. I'll see you next week!
