No Resolutions, Only Resolve
Today marks six months of unemployment. Half a year without steady income; half a year on unemployment that only just covers my rent in this insanely expensive city; half a year chasing old contacts and discovering most of them, like myself, no longer have jobs; half a year scraping together what little freelance money I can to keep the lights on...
I wish I could say that I held off sending this newsletter until today because of a terrible anniversary. Really, though, it's been delayed because the world has just been too much. I know many of you are feeling it too. Sometimes, it can be hard to balance talking about the world of entertainment while the reality we live in is so cruel. But I'm also fully aware of how essential it is amidst all of the devastation.
Which is all to say that I do not come to your inbox with defeat, but with resolve. I have no resolutions or inspirational diatribes to offer. Only the decision to keep fighting and to hope that you will too. I'm far from the only person in my situation, and much of the world is dealing with the political fallout unraveling in the United States. But I'm one of them that you're currently subscribed to, and I'm here to tell you that we only lose when we give up.
I don't have any new pieces for you because December is a dead-zone and the first week of January was regrettably pretty similar. However, you can find me in both FANGORIA and Den of Geek magazines this week. Both issues are now at a newsstand near you (or can be purchased online). In FANGO, you'll find an interview with the cast of Primate, which released last weekend and absolutely rips. In Den of Geek, you'll find my exclusive interview with Nia DaCosta for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which also rips and heads to theaters this weekend.
The Pitt and The Rookie (on HBO Max and Hulu, respectively) have also both returned with their respective seasons. The Rookie remains some of the only acceptable copaganda on TV, and you've heard enough about The Pitt at the beginning of awards season to know that it's beloved. Both employ full writers rooms and have 15+ episode seasons and so, in my book, both shows are working to save television as the format slips closer and closer to being meaningless the shorter seasons get. If you're looking for distractions, both are incredibly viable options.
Shrinking also returns at the end of this month. If you haven't had a chance to watch the first two seasons just yet, I can tell you with complete confidence that it is the best comedy on TV and absolutely worth your time. (It's on Apple TV+)
I wish I had better or more interesting updates to share with you, or something profound or inspiring to get you moving, but this is what I have in me right now. Today, that is enough. Next week will be better. I hope you are gentle with yourselves in the meantime.
