The Pickety Witch - An Understandable Despair

Someone tweets praise for a line from a TV show and... screenwriters turn it into a meme to make fun of of other screenwriters’ work.

You could just be nice, y’all. It’s free.
We're going into this week's newsletter with this energy, y'all. I know we're all smad all the time, but damn.

The thing about hair and makeup in film and television is that it's meant to do its job without drawing attention away from the narrative. That's what makes women like Emma Fraser, who take the time to highlight these art forms, so important. Here she is with Elle-freaking-Magazine doing just that! Rebecca Sun sat down with Kelly Marie Tran, who is thriving. I did not love The Empty Man, but Matt Monagle sure as heck did! And he sat down to have a good long talk with David Prior about it.
Meanwhile, Jen Bartel decided to ruin all of our lives with this:
“What is grief, if not love, persevering?” 💔 #wandavision https://t.co/o4W3oLIAUJ

- SDCC is happening at home again this year. Except for in November, when they plan to host a smaller event. What do "smaller" and "event" mean in this context? We're not sure yet! Either way, the Comic-Con giant plans to return (safely) in 2022.
- The Golden Globes happened! The HFPA was just as cringe as expected in their apology for an extreme lack of diversity within the organization and its nominees, and Amy Poehler and Tina Fey did what they could with an unfortunate situation. Jason Sudeikis was high as a kite, Anya Taylor-Joy was a vision in green, and Jane Fonda remains a legend. Meanwhile Taylor Simone Ledward destroyed us all with an acceptance speech for her late husband, Chadwick Boseman.
- Seth Rogen launched a weed company.
- Cobra Kai Season 4 started production.
- Amazon Prime Video's Invincible got a new clip:
The Good News Is...
- A high school principal fixed a self conscious kid's haircut after he got sent to him for refusing to take off his hat.
- Sometimes you call your best friend your sister. Sometimes, that best friend actually ends up being your sister.
- I football hate the hell out of Aaron Rodgers. Imagine my "dismay" that he's actually a chronically good dude.
- The people of Texas are good, actually.
- States are rapidly expanding vaccine access now that supply is available.
Get Loud
Political accountability isn’t something either party is used to. Having a democrat back in office is much better than a full-blown fascist, but we’ve still got to hold them accountable. I’m not here to preach at anyone! This section will simply be under-reported or represented stories that deserve our eyes and our voices.
- For the folks in Austin, here are locations that are maintaining their mask rules until science tells them otherwise.
- Arkansas is vying for a near-total abortion ban.
- Mississippi is in the middle of a water crisis that nearly no one is talking about.
The Baby Step
Start cutting the ties/elastics on your disposable masks if you wear them! They're not recyclable, and the ties can be harmful to wildlife.
Ok, so this is technically two baby steps. But do you know who your local politicians are? Start with your senator. See if they align with your views.
I Want To Do More
There is a never-ending list of actions that you can take to better someone else's situation, we're just conditioned to believe that our political action doesn't matter. Since the last four years have taught us that is far from the case, we're keeping this train rollin'.
- Women's reproductive rights are constantly at risk. If you have some spare bucks, giving to Planned Parenthood is always a good move.
- Learn about gerrymandering. We all have a vague idea of the term by now, but do you really get it? Virtue signaling dems think it's cute to call out Texas while their liberal population has been fighting some of the worst gerrymandering in America their entire voting lives. It's time we all join the fight to make sure the last four years never happen again. The cheat to win game has to stop, and fighting gerrymandering is a huge way to hobble it.
The Film Rec
I'm going to need all of you to go watch Amy Poehler's Moxie immediately. It's loud, proud, intersectional, and feminist af. It left me grinning for hours.
TV I'm Digging This Week
I realize it's not a new show, but I've been bingeing the hell out of Cutthroat Kitchen. Their spooky special was big fun. Sticking with the Amy Poehler trend, if you haven't watched all of Making It yet you should do yourself a favor.
Read Some Stuff
Did you know that in addition to being the next Marvel up and comer, Steph Williams has a comic with Oneill Jones called Living Heroes? Get on it, it's good.
