The Pickety Witch — Fantastic Fest Round 1

V/H/S 94

The V/H/S movies have never been my thing (especially the first one). Found footage is extremely hit or miss for me. The same can be said for anthologies, so you can see why this is a franchise that I struggle with most of the time. That said, V/H/S 94 ended up being a pretty admirable entry. I'm not in love with it, but I liked it more than I have any of the others. If either of the aforementioned subgenres are your thing, I suspect you'll have a good time.

Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes

Y'all I really wanted to love this one, especially after so many folks I trust dug it the way they did. Ultimately, all of the comparisons to One Cut of the Dead didn't do Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes. It has neither the heart or the aptitude. Even without that, though, it's just frustratingly repetitive.

Iké Boys

I have a full review of this one coming out before I start the new gig at [redacted], but the short version is that I found it to be quite cute. There's nothing groundbreaking, and it's certainly not going to be considered traditionally "good" by many folks, but it has plenty of OG Power Rangers vibes and the story's pretty warm. Chalk this one up to a "nice" watch.

There's Someone Inside Your House

I am neither under or overwhelmed by Netflix's There's Someone Inside Your House. There's some pretty great gore, and the primary cast does a solid job, but I also found it to be alarmingly average. It's worth a view if you're one of the 200 million plus Netflix subscribers, but no need to go out of your way to seek it out.

Let the Wrong One In

I love this dumb movie. It's a bad movie. It's a stupid movie. And I'm delighted by it. Let the Wrong One In is at no point bothered by what it is as a film. No, it knows exactly what it is and it's thrilled by its own shenanigans. Not sold yet? Anthony Stewart Head is a vampire hunting mentor with an obsession with trains. Go. Go find this movie immediately.

Mad God

If you know anything about me, you know that I worship the ground Phil Tippett and his crazy mind walk on. So I suppose you could say that Mad God is an appropriate title for the insanity that unfolds throughout the film. Technically, Guillermo del Toro wasn't wrong when he called Tippett a master. Moreover, I'm very, very glad he finally got to make his film. Regrettably, that film is just not for me at all. There are remarkable character designs, and stop motion is always something to behold, but Junk Head is the infinitely more capable — while still being weird as hell — film.

What Else?

The interview I mentioned with Azie Tesfai is live! Her episode of Supergirl was so, so great and I love that she got to be the first person to (co) write and star in a chapter of one of the shows.

There's still 2 days to get in on the Spookytime Special on my Patreon. I picked the cards today, and I can't wait to write 'em!

New job starts next Monday, and I can't wait to get rolling (and sharing! Being a superstitious nit is hard).

See you next Tuesday with more movies, the big news, and card updates!
