We're rolling right into some baby steps today. MLK day was yesterday, but this newsletter goes out on Tuesdays, and it turns out everyone getting the day off didn't solve systemic racism.
- Call your senator (202-224-3121) and tell them to pass the Freedom to Vote and John Lewis Voting Rights acts.
- Support the National Civil Rights Museum.
- Help fight against the book ban in Texas.
- Learn about the Equal Justice Initiative, and the National Urban League.
What to Watch
MLK/FBI — Sam Pollard's 2020 documentary highlights how the FBI harassed MLK via their "investigations." Stream it on Hulu.
Selma — Ava DuVernay's breathtaking historical drama focuses on the Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches in 1965. Stream it on Hulu or Peacock.
Eyes on the Prize - America's Civil Rights Movement 1954-1985 — A 14-part documentary about the 20th-century civil rights movement in the United States. It's a lot, but it's worth it. It can be rented on Amazon
Who to Follow
These are always gonna be twitter accounts, sorry y'all. Facebook is the debbul, I barely understand tiktok, and that's not really what instagram is for.
- Bernice King, CEO of Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, daughter of MLK Jr, and one of the most enriching accounts to follow.
- Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis and I don't have the same god, but she worships hers in a way that that doesn't matter. That should give you a good enough idea of who she is as a person.
- Michael Harriet — biting wit and scalding commentary. That's all you need to know.
Pay no mind to the man behind the curtain
Just a couple of well-earned callouts of organizations saying "happy MLK day" while being complete scrubs. No, finding the respective drags of all the republican senators hiding behind cherrypicked quotes wasn't worth it.
1. This will be a thread of corporations that are "honoring" MLK Jr on Twitter today but donated to the @NRSC in the last year, supporting a caucus that is filibustering voting rights and a chair (@SenRickScott) who voted to overturn the last election

Kaiser promised their therapists paid time off on MLK day, and broke that promise.

They promised to hire more Black therapists, and broke that promise.
So Kaiser therapists in Oakland and Richmond walked out together to honor MLK themselves. They're picketing right now https://t.co/vkVGdC7fNM
I Scream, You Scream
Scream ruled. You can read my print review here, and I also helped with breaking down That Ending™ and highlighted some of the Easter Eggs. (The Easter Eggs and ending are the only thing on this list that are spoiler-filled for all of the obvious reasons.)
If video's more your thing, I've got the best VO work I've done yet in my video review.
And if you're just looking for some wholesome content, I chatted with the entire cast about their favorite lines of the series. I'd say please enjoy me maintaining my calm as Neve Campbell tells me her favorite Scream line (which is my favorite Scream line), but my incredible video team took mercy on me and kept my fave out of it at that point.
