The Pickety Witch — Stress is the Glue
Lil Bites
I am enamored by Jenn Adams' piece on The Babadook and mental health for Certified Forgotten. Truly one of the best pieces to go up on the site. A group of exceptional journalists got together with the LA Times to discuss Hollywood's complicated (and problematic) relationship with Latinx folks. Meanwhile, Felice León zeroed in on the lack of Afro-Latinx folks in In the Heights. Vinnie Mancuso wrote a very good piece about Loki and its emotional impact so far.
ICYMI...
- NBC has cancelled Manifest.
- Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist also got the ax. If you didn't watch it, change that. It's very good.
- Jane Austen fans will get a kick out of the first images for Netflix's Persuasion adaptation.
- Jessica Henwick has joined the unstoppable cast of Knives Out 2.
The Good News Is,
- Some jerk stole this guy's bike. A stranger replaced it.
- A student headed to Harvard donated a 40K scholarship.
- You made it to Tuesday.
Get Loud
Health and access to healthcare can be political. Which is why, despite the fact that I've harped on this already, I'm reiterating that it's very important to get your flu shot and continue to, uh... wash your hands. Free flu shots are everywhere. Taking care of each other isn't a herculean effort. Don't feel great? Stay home! Can't stay home? Wear a mask!
You might be able to afford some time off if you get sick, but that single mother of three you just infected can't. Take care of each other.
The Baby Step
The baby step is get a flu shot. You can walk into CVS and do it before you start your shopping. It takes less than 5 minutes most places. It's free most places.
Have yours? Remind folks that it's important that they get their flu vaccine too!
Concerned? Let's talk about flu vaccine myths.
Whatcha Watchin'?
I had the privilege of screening F9 this week (in theaters June 25th). While the movie tries to take some big emotional swings that read more as silly than touching, it's still got everything you expect from a Fast and the Furious movie. (And space!) There's a lot I wish hadn't been in the trailers though. Han's return was hugely exciting, but would have had a stronger punch if it were a surprise. All the same, this one's definitely worth checking out on the big screen.
My bud and I have been bingeing Legends of Tomorrow (his first time, my... third?) lately. I've certainly sang the show's praises in this newsletter before, but it really is wonderful. I enjoy them both, to be sure, but Legends does everything Doom Patrol tries to do better and on a smaller budget. Praise Beebo!
The second episode of Loki hits on Wednesday. This episode actually left me wondering if the series may benefit from a binge rather than watching weekly (much like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier before it). I liked the premiere, but something about where episode 2 leaves off left me a little sour. You can catch me on Rotten Tomatoes' Twitter Spaces chatting the episode on Wednesday!
