The Pickety Witch — The Update

Lil Bites

Christine Makepeace wrote a short story for the Amethyst Review. S'got witches! You can catch Lindsay Traves on the Kingcast litigating the Torrence Family vs. The Overlook Hotel. JM Mutore discussed the New Black Film Rebellion on Roger Ebert.

The Good News Is,

  • I want to be her when I grow up.
  • Balto.
  • Listen. Sometimes the aggregators I use to find this stuff comes up short and this week was one of them. But the good news is that your butt looks great in those pants. BAM!

Get Loud

We're doing things a little bit differently this week. And not because there aren't plenty of issues that need our attention. The thing is, there will always be a myriad of things that need our support. Activism isn't a race, it's a marathon. Turns out ending up on the sidelines vomiting rather than being in the game isn't useful in any circumstance!

This week your task is to do something kind for yourself, whether big or small. I'm not here to go all self-care guru on you. But, as the queen of forgetting to take care of herself while focusing on everything else, I'm here to remind you that the most important tool in your work, your life, and your activism, is you. Don't break you. We need you.

If you still want something tangible that makes you feel like you put in an effort, I recommend a donation to Random Acts. It's my favorite charity, and one of the most important in my mind.

Anyway. Do nice things for you. Maybe I wrote this in my bathtub because my body hurts from no sleep and a lot of driving but that doesn't stop deadlines. We'll never know!

The Next Couple of Weeks

Speaking of doing things a little bit differently — Pickety Witch's format is going to be slightly altered the next couple weeks. I wanted to be sure I met my commitment to getting the newsletter out weekly while still being mindful of everything that I have to accomplish with the move. So, what I came up with is this:

The next two (maybe 3?) weeks will be mailbag style. Want to know how I got into activism? Why the newsletter was created? About a certain social issue? Television show? What my favorite color is? The world's your oyster. If I get a bunch of questions (unlikely, I'm not that interesting ;)) Patreon subscribers will get first crack! Since we have a couple of weeks, I wouldn't worry about me not getting to your question!

So, hit me up! You can respond here, or shoot me a message on Twitter or Instagram.

WARNING: Creeps will be handled at my discretion.

Have you checked out the Merri Hour yet? The weekly YouTube show is hosted by Matt Donato and Perri Nemiroff. The two discuss all the goings on of the movie world, and then Perri destroys Matt at beer pong. (This is what happens when you pay for an ad but don’t give me much content. I roast you. It’s true though, poor bud’s on a losing streak.)

As both a guest and a frequent watcher of the show (Fridays at 4:30PM PST/7:30PM EST), I can assure you it’s well worth your time. It’s one of the few good things to come out of quarantine. Watch their socials (tagged above) for the weekly link, or subscribe directly to Perri’s YouTube channel so you get the notifications!

Whatcha Watchin'?

Honestly? Ted Lasso again. Everything is hard right now and Lasso makes it nice.

I completely spaced adding my F9 reaction last week. It's pretty simple! (My reaction, not the movie. They go to space!) I'm very glad Vin Diesel and co took their conversation with Michelle Rodriguez seriously. Congrats to the first Fast movie that passes the Bechdel Test! (This is a joke, but also true.) The women whip all kinds of ass in this flick. Other parts are good too. The "drama" isn't one of those good parts, but there's enough silliness and explosions to get you through. I had a great time!
