The Pickety Witch — Writing is Hard

The Pickety Witch — Writing is Hard

Lil Bites

Welcome back to Lil Bites! It's a short section this week, as there was either a dry spell on editorials or I just wasn't on Twitter as much. Worry not! There are still some goodies. Kayleigh Donaldson broke down whether or not the West Side Story remake can really pull it off. Meagan Navarro continued her monster excellence with her breakdown of spooky mermaids. And, Graeme McMillan broke down what makes the idea of Marvels being the Captain Marvel sequel such an interesting notion!

Round 2, Fight!

We did it, Joe!
We did it, Joe!

Started from quarantine and now we're here! Er... still in quarantine. But now with only 9 days until I can safely play outside with the other kids. So far as side effects go, I'm not going to lie to y'all — I got my ass kicked. My whole body hurt, I had a fever, I was nauseated toward the end, and I was extremely restless. It creeped up slow, hit hard the night after, and then ebbed. It wasn't the best 48 hours of my life.

And I would still do it again as many times as necessary.

No sugar coating: I wasn't comfortable. But that seems like a very small price to pay. If you still have vaccination anxiety and want to talk it through, reply to this newsletter, we can work it out. I'm even happy to help you get scheduled if you're comfortable sharing the information needed.

If you're looking for some resources about why vaccines are critical right now, here's what I've been using: John Hopkins Medical, The CDC, The Mayo Clinic, Bloomberg.

Also? All y'all, listen to me: you still need to get your damn flu shot! Do it. It's 3 seconds at a CVS. You have a sore arm for 24 hours, then you're fine! Many of us have been holed up in our houses for over a year. All those germs we were used to before are just waiting. A lot of us will still probably get sick from other things. SO WHY OPEN OURSELVES UP TO SOMETHING WE HAVE A VACCINATION AGAINST?! Go get your flu shot. I'll fight you. (I'll also, like, help you with a Lyft if it's a transportation thing!)

April's Donation!

I'm a firm believer in putting my money where my mouth is. Because of that, one of the first things I built into my Patreon was the idea that 10% of our gross monthly proceeds would go to the charity of me and my Patron's choosing! This month? The Trevor Project. As a group, we donated $27 to help one of the leading orgs working to take care of LGBTQ youth. Trans kids around America are under direct attack, making the life-saving support and resources the Trevor Project provides more important than ever. If you'd like to join in or match our donation, you can find their donation page here.

ICYMI...

The Good News Is,

Get Loud

It's Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and hate crimes against the AAPI community continue to rise after years of the former president's dangerous rhetoric. Help lift up the voices of your AAPI colleagues. Give them the space they deserve, and speak out when you hear thoughtless conversations filled with "jokes" and "locker room talk."

The Baby Step

Go follow CAPE! CAPE champions diversity by educating, connecting, and empowering Asian American and Pacific Islander artists and leaders in entertainment and media.

I Want to do More

CAPE has loads of great options for every level of involvement in their program. They also host writers and leaders fellowships!

Patreon Update

iPad and pencil arrived. Decided to depict this week's mood.

I know we already did the donation talk up a little higher, but it feels inky talking about donating to somewhere else and bringing up the newsletter's Patreon in the same breath whether some of the proceeds go to charity or not.

This update's pretty quick!

  • We are currently only $63 a month from the Pickety Witch Book Club, and
  • Pretty sure we'll be going with a Good Reads forum as our discussion host once we hit this goal!

Whatcha Watchin'?

  • You've likely heard half of your friends praise The Mitchells vs The Machines already, but I'm reiterating it, because it's a perfect film. I went in extremely luke-warm on the film despite enjoying Lord and Miller projects and by the time it was over I had happy cried twice and couldn't stop grinning.
  • Initiation (2020) was another surprise for me. It's somehow a perfect balance of the Greek system's stereotypes while simultaneously subverting them. There's also a couple very solid conversations in what had initially looked like a vapid slasher. It hits theaters and VOD May 7th.
